Troubleshooting Windshield Wipers Not Working

Bmw Rear Wiper Not WorkingHi, My rear wiper stopped working last week. Fronts are ok, rear washer ok, just wont wipe its rear (thats enough of that!). Checked the fuse, ok. Tried to check relay (destroyed it in the process, so got a new one anyway), and it sounds like its clicking on for 10-15 seconds before clicking off (estimate, not timed) which is consistent with the three or four wipes I remember from when it did work. Removed the wiper unit, stripped it, removed the rust from the mechanism so it runs smoothly, re-greased and resealed everything. Circuit tester shows continuity between each pair of the three connections to the unit (so no broken circuits or grease in the way, I assume). Voltage tester on the wiring harness plug shows one earth, one permanent 12v, but the third wire does nothing even when the relay switches, ignition on or off, and boot shut (which seems to affect whether the washer works). I've had a cruise retro-fit (12 months ago), but i assume its not a dodgy switch if the relay is clicking. The only thing i can think is a broken wire. Anyone any other ideas, or clue how the access the wire to test it, or idea why a wire might just fail. Should there be any voltage on the third wire when it operates, of is it one of those electronic signal lines? I hope theres something obvious i'm missing. Thanks.

The wiper blade is not contacting the center of the drivers side windshield. I have tried the old metal cage style blade and the more modern one piece rubber/plastic housing model. Both have the same problem. I solved it by opening the rear window (so the wiper is not clicked into the motor) then squirt some WD40 into the wiper mechanism (I put the oil in from the outside). Gently move the wiper from side to side until it starts to free up - after a couple of movements the wiper should be moving freely again.
