What works for the movie
- Rakesh’s developing each character and event so painstakingly elaborately…justifying each act of the players…with a detailed background reasoning …
- The Performances –
- Farhan has done extremely well to build his (upper) body…and get that Milkha look right…his natural stern cocky look works for him here as a proud fauji…with a troubled background…hungry for glory…
- while in essence it’s the lead actor that leads a biopic…here it’s the (genuine) Punjabi support staff…hear them speak that gluttral Punjabi from the heart…and correct pronunciation too…Farhan manages just 3 Punju words in the movie Tui (Back)..Dudh (milk)…n Aaho (I will)…watch the Punju bunch that really lend credibility to this Punju tale…whether its his National coach (Yograj F/o Yuvraj Singh- good) …his dad Art Mallick – Good…his regimental coach (Pavan Malhotra – Brilliant)…or his Behna (Divya Datta – Outstanding)….
- Heartfelt Storytelling…ROM really brings to life the pre partition scenes..the events..and the turmoil in the li’ll Milkha’s head…right till he grows up …and finally takes that cathartic drive back to his Pak house…where he last lay on top a heap of dead bodies of his family…as a 10 year old…

What doesn’t work for the movie:-
- The length of the movie – 187 movies just too long…lots of needless scenes and elaborate songs…a li’ll editing to a crisper 165 mins would have made it bearable…sadly u have the audience laughing when Milkha is crying in front of his ancestral home…I blame it on stretching things too much
- The Sonam romantic track …small …needless…unless is actually happened ?
- Most Importantly ROM does not come clean whether its actually Milkha Singh’s tale…just an “Inspired by a true life” in the end…so u don’t know which part is real or which part is fiction…did the nights with an Aussie lass ruin his Melbourne Olympics…or did he turn back in Rome …when heading for the gold medal…leading the pack…to see a ghost from the past…to eventually miss even that Bronze (just as a PT Usha did a few decades later)…was a Sonam really there in his life…whom did he marry…how did he rise thru’ the ranks in the Army…Noone is interested in a dumb “ No Im not Relaxing, Im Milkha Singh” repartee…
- The sex scenes too are pretty needless and elaborate…whether in the Refugee tent or with the Aussie…btw will the real Mr Milkha confess whether they actually happened??
- Too many songs…just a ‘Chariots of Fire’ kind of good background score would have made the movie so much more classy…playing too much into the hands of the front benchers ROM stops short of making a classic…
- Most great athletes are produced by anger translating into great energy…so while there are rebukes, insults and beatings by fellow contestants…before most events…the zen like composure of Milkha to reply to them while running doesn’t seem natural at all…a li’ll more passion and anger and display of victory would seem more human…and connect better with the audiences…
- A li’ll more input on the quarter mile running…most runners including our Sardarji are showing running in the outside of their lane…dumb…u end up running a few 10 metres more…not much of a difference…but the difference between winning and losing…
